OPSEU Local 596 – CIBC Run for the Cure

What Was It?

The CIBC Run for the Cure is a 1K walk or 5K run that helps raise funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. It’s the single largest volunteer-lead event in Canada to support breast cancer.

I was founder of my Local 596 OPSEU team and Team Captain for the CIBC Run for the Cure in 2014 & 2013.

I developed a marketing strategy which saw team growth in the second year from 13 to 29 participants, this included securing Ryerson Athletics as a training sponsor. Sponsorship included two, 1 hour training session each week (June-October) led by a fitness instructor and free access to the gym facilities.

I collaborated with another Ryerson team in fundraising initiatives which resulted in community building amongst students, staff & faculty. Reaching out to 1200 Local 596 members I organized a 2hr fundraiser and helped raise 5758.00$ of a 2500.00$ team goal. This was in addition to the 389.60$ raised during the fundraiser.
